Smaller and Isolated Grassland Fragments Are Exposed to Stronger Seed and Insect Predation in Habitat Edges

چکیده
Habitat fragmentation threatens terrestrial arthropod biodiversity, and thereby also leads to alterations of ecosystem functioning stability. Predation on insects seeds by arthropods are two very important ecological functions because their community-structuring effects. We addressed the effect fragment connectivity, size, edge insect seed predation arthropods. studied 60 natural fragments grassland ecosystems in same region (Hungarian Great Plain), 30 forest-steppes, burial mounds (kurgans). The size were range 0.16–6.88 ha for forest-steppe 0.01–0.44 kurgan. used 2400 sentinel preys (dummy caterpillars) 4800 trays measurements. Attack marks dummy caterpillars predator identification calculation rates. In case seeds, rates calculated as number missing or damaged per total exposed seeds. Increasing connectivity played a role only generally small kurgans, with negative edges. contrast, moderated effects large forest-steppes. difference between edges centres was more pronounced than fragments. Our study emphasizes landscape fragment-scale factors interacting shaping modified landscapes. Managing functional landscapes optimize assessment services needs multispatial scale approach.

متن کاملDistribution Ecology: Variation in Plant Recruitment over a Gradient in Relation to Insect Seed Predation
Although predispersal seed predation by insects is common, no test exists of its effect on plant recruitment. This study examines seed predation in the population dynamics of a native, temperate shrub, Haplopappus squarrosus H. and A. (Asteraceae), over an elevational gradient in the coastal sage scrub vegetation of San Diego County, California USA. Frequency and abundance of H. squarrosus incr...
متن کاملSmall-mammal seed predation limits the recruitment and abundance of two perennial grassland forbs.
Although post-dispersal seed predators are common and often reduce seed density, their influence on plant population abundance remains unclear. On the one hand, increasing evidence suggests that many plant populations are seed limited, implying that seed predators could reduce plant abundance. On the other hand,.it is generally uncertain whether the magnitude of seed limitation imposed by grani...

Abundance and habitat segregation in Mediterranean grassland species: the importance of seed weight
We analysed the relationship between seed traits (weight, shape and dispersal structures) and the abundance and habitat segregation of Mediterranean grassland species. To take into account possible correlations with other plant traits, the study also includes 5 vegetative traits (growth form, plant longevity, clonality, onset of flowering and plant size) of commonly accepted functional importan...
